B Ride

Alto Velo's B Ride peloton consists of former riders who have retired from racing, up-and-coming riders who enjoy a challenge and strong riders who enjoy camaraderie. Based on the principle of getting outdoors and seeing and doing some cool things, this ride is meant to be challenging but doable. Mostly a no-drop ride, we average 50 miles per ride.

Start: Saturdays 9:00am from Summit Bicycles at 392 California Ave in Palo Alto, rolling at 9:10am. New riders welcome!

Pace: Moderate and sometimes fast. If you're at the front early on, know the route and please look back to see that the group is together (three souls gasping for air is not considered a group). Paceline when possible, wait at the top of longer climbs

Regroups: We regroup at the top and bottom of hills and recover after every climb

Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/4519225

The B Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.

See below for details of the upcoming ride as well as past rides.

AV-B Ride November 18, 2023 - Dodging the Rain

Hello AV-Bers!

The forecast for this Saturday is threatening rain so we’ll stick to the lowlands and see if we can dodge the storm clouds. If it looks like we’ll have more significant rain I’ll make the call on Friday night whether to fall back to the standard rain route.

This route winds us through Cupertino neighborhoods until we regroup in Saratoga. From there, we’ll head back over Mt. Eden and the Los Altos Hills. If we’re lucky and the weather clears, then we’ll add on the base of Montebello to Peacock Ct. as a short out-and-back option.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

AV-B Ride November 11 2023 - RWG - 9 - Portola Redwoods

Hi AV-Bers,
This week we are going to start by heading south on Foothill before climbing Redwood Gulch onto Highway 9. From the top of 9 we will ride skyline to the top of West Alpine where we will descend into Portola Redwoods State Park, and come back out the way we came and continue down Pagemill back to coffee. The official regroups will be Canyon Picnic Area, Top of 9 and top of Alpine/Pagemill before we do the Portola climb. There is water at the base of the Portola Climb if you need it, but I don’t think it makes sense to force a regroup there.

Hope to see you there!

AV-B Ride October 28 2023 - Swetty La Honda

Hi AV-Bers,

LKHC is far away this week (Mt Tam) so we are going to do something spooky and return to Simon’s Swetty… La Honda. We did this same route a few months ago and it was good fun. We will regroup at corner of Alpine and Portola, Skylonda, Skylonda again, Top of Kings, and the Water Temple. Its starting to be pretty cool in the mornings, but seems like the weather will be nice by the time we are headed back on Cañada. If you feel like a little more punchy climbs you can dip into Emerald hills or Westridge on the way home.

Hope to see you there!

AV-B Ride October 21 2023 - Kings and West Alpine

Hi AV-Bers,

This week’s Low Key Hill Climb is West Alpine (this segment), so I decided to take the B ride there for primarily selfish reasons. We’ll start out with Kings via Huddart and a section of the maze (it’s a slightly unconventional way to get there, so make sure you know where you’re going if you’re on the front), then travel down Skyline and 84 before the “fun” starts and we head back up West Alpine.

Hope to see you there!

AV-B Ride September 30 2023 - Montebello and the 9

Hi AV-Bers,

This week marks the start of a very important local race series: Low Key Hill Climbers! Anyone else excited? For those who haven’t heard of it the basic premise is each week from now until Thanksgiving you ride the designated hill and then results are tallied on Strava for ultimate climbing glory. It’s free to enter but you have to register on the website (http://lowkeyhillclimbs.com/2023/).
The first hill for the series is Montebello, so this week we’re going to tackle that as part of the B-ride. We’ll head south along Foothill at a leisurely pace, before going full gas up the hill. After descending, we’ll have a water stop at the Canyon Picnic Area at the corner of Stevens Canyon Rd and Mt Eden before going up Redwood Gulch and the 9. Up to you whether you want to hold back on Montebello to save your legs for the second climb or go for glory with LKHC and risk blowing up.
We’ll then head along Skyline and down Page Mill, before going back to Backyard Brew for coffee.

AVB Ride August 5: Montebello-RWG-Mora-Moody

AV-B Ride July 15 2023 - Coastal Classic

Peleton

Rinse and repeat of last week - only better. I have shared IG Messages with Moss and Wonder, and they will be waiting at the top of Tunitas for ice lollies. We are also going to celebrate our achievement by eating Terun pizza back at Cal Ave at the end of the ride. We are working out the logistics as it is costly to reserve the patio. We may still end up there or some place along Cal Ave. For AV members, this food is part of your benefits, and the cost will be covered by the AV Social Club. Last week both rides finished about the same time so hopefully we can have some B & C intermingling.

Please sign up for the Bike Hut Classic as we will be doing this segment on the ride, and Abundant Grace is one of the communities we are supporting through our club.

Additionally, there will be no B/C Ride on July 22. That is the day of our Pesky Road Race and you all should be volunteering for the event. Please head to this spreadsheet and sign up for a volunteer role.
